The Greeks often worshiped the twelve Olympian gods in temples or areas that were sacred to the specific god that was being worshiped. Each god had a different temple that one had to go to if they were to worship them. These temples or areas of worship were often in areas that complimented the specific god. For example, Poseidon who was the god of the sea, his temple was surrounded by water on three sides to compliment his power of the sea. However, these temples were not used to house rituals, religious practices or sacrifices, those activities were to be held outside at an altar that was designated to the specific god.
